things are moving along. i don't know if nicely, or slowly, or what, but for sure, inevitably. we are trying to finalize all our details, but it always seems like there is just one little thing hanging out there for everything so that the book can't be closed for some reason or another.
we met with the photographer tonight. that went very well. but, like i said, not 100% settled. one picture that i really want to get is the one where rick and i leave the church to everyone throwing rose petals at us. i've already asked my deacon twice and been turned down, but i'm going for a third time, gosh darnit. b/c i really want it. the good deacon is concerned it won't be picked up but i'll tell him i'll do it myself. i just really think that is a beautiful picture. so wish me luck on that one.
i also sorta finalized the flowers last week, but the whole petals thing is holding that transaction up. i'm not sure if my best bet is to beg him in person or implore him on the phone. maybe i'll bake him a pecan pie or something to appeal to his softer side. any ideas are appreciated. you can email me at work (maureen@ja-g.com).
the cake situation is almost finalized. we met with the baker and chose flavors, etc. so i guess that's mostly done. but i have to go back the week before the wedding with cash in hand before it's officially official.
had my second and final fitting yesterday. will pick it up, all pressed and ready (i hope) the thursday before the big day.
still trying to find a videographer. there are just some things that will be happening that i'd for sure like to immortalize forever on dvd. our photographer recommended a guy i'd already been in touch with who isn't available. but i was saddened all over again, hearing how great he is and how inexpensive. c'est la vie. i may have to hit up friends and relatives for those must-have moments, so be prepared. ;)
we really need to finalize our plans with the reception hall, but i'm waiting until we have all the rsvps in. if you're one of those folks who hasn't yet done it, whether you're coming or not, please go to sendrsvp.com and put in extension 895 a.s.a.p. if not, you'll be getting a call. please don't let me know directly. thanks!
confirmed hair appts with the salon. am having my run through this weekend. am i boring you guys to death? i have no idea, so i'm just giving you the latest since that's what this thing is supposed to be about.
went to a friend's wedding in wisconsin over the weekend. mt. horeb, to be exact. it was at tyrol basin, a local ski resort. it was very nice, though it rained throughout the outdoors ceremony and subsequent ski lift rides. but they say that's good luck, don't they? not sure what they'd say about rick getting a tick on him, the poor guy. i swear he is a tick magnet. luckily, i didn't get any. we enjoyed all the local beer and cheese on our whirlwind tour.
this weekend will probably be a craft and clean weekend for me. still need to make bows for the pews, make my flower girl baskets, finalize the program, etc., etc., etc. i can see it now; i'll be pulling an all-nighter the night before my wedding. ;)
oh yeah. we ordered our wedding bands a few weeks ago. i think they were supposed to be in by last weekend, but no dice. keep your fingers crossed on that one.
hope all is well w/everyone. looking forward to seeing you all soon. it should be fun!
that reminds me. so far, the cicadas have been a bust in my neighborhood. or should i say, on my street. that may be due to the lack of trees. we can hear their mating calls off in the distance...it really does sound like a 1950's sci fi flick when the flying saucers start hovering. some friends of mine have been bombarded, but for some reason, not us. tho i guess there's still only like 2 billion out on the way to 5 billion. so i'll keep you posted.
talk to ya soon, m.

Cicada Watch 2004
well, here we are, day 4 since the cicadas officially emerged and really, not that impressive. the way the media described it, i was expecting to look into the sky and only see a huge, swarming black cloud of these bugs that have waited 17 long years to descend upon the queen city. but alas, it was not to be. according to the news reports, the cicadas reared their larval heads on thursday. didn't see any. had that big rain, but still no bugs come friday. saturday, just after stating aloud that i didn't think they were ever coming, one literally fell out of the sky in front of my face.
much to my happy surprise, they were not as hideous as expected. as a matter of fact, i would almost call them pretty. their little larval husks are ugly, but the bugs themselves are kinda attractive. everyone had built up these menacing, satanic red eyes, but they're very subdued. and their wings are almost golden. i was expecting these giant, winged, cockroach-looking things. glad that's not the case.
rick and i took a walk today and were on serious cicada scouting duty. i saw one loan larvae husk on a tree and we were saying, 'man, there's none out yet.' then i looked up and there were a bunch on the leaves above our heads. but really, most of the ones we've seen are either the empty husks or dead cicadas. but considering there are supposed to be 5 million of these things flitting about, very disappointing thus far.
mother nature hasn't been cooperating much, either. they finally come up and the temperature drops about 30 degrees. we only had a high of 56 yesterday. so i don't know if that hurt them. plus, all the birds and squirrels are having a field day. digging in the ground. poor things wait 17 years to fight their way out of the earth only to become a scoobie snack. apparently, cicadas are good eatin'. they're supposedly the hershey kisses of the bug world. so every other creature - including dogs, cats, and yes, even people - eat them until they gorge themselves, allowing the ones who were on the late train to make their way to the tree tops to mate. this is certainly a case where being the first is not necessarily the best.
anyway, don't want to bore you with too much cicada talk, but it is interesting. for instance, the males don't even have any mouths. crazy, eh?
okay, enough about the cicadas for now. i will try to actually give you a wedding update next time. though i'll give you a sneak peak: i'm freakin' out! i don't know where the past 17 months have gone, but as usual, i am here at the last minute trying to squeeze everything in. typical, right mom? ;)
hope all is well with everyone....4 weeks to go! love ya, m.

i just cannot seem to keep on top of this thing...or anything else, for that matter.
well, the big news around here for the past several weeks has been the cicada invasion. or the threat thereof. you'd think there was no other news going on in the world. the irony is they've been talking about these bugs coming out since last saturday. all we needed was the ground temperature to be such-and-such (somewhere between 59 and 64 degrees, rick and i can't agree), and out 5 billion of these hideous creatures are supposed to emerge. well, it was hot all weekend, and no red-eyed, glorififed flying cockroaches were tp be found. then all we needed was a soaking rain. that's supposed to have been coming all week and here it is thursday. up until about 20 minutes ago, no rain. but it is really coming down. so i guess only time will tell if they're really coming out. stay tuned.
as a related story, apparently cicadas are good eats. all protein. no fat. i, for one, will not be finding out. they have red eyes, for goodness' sake. and they're bugs. blech. tho i guess i'll be seeing their innards up close and personal as everyones saying you wind up stepping on them there's so many. yikes. not looking forward to this at all. i think it's mostly fear of the unknown. and everyone trying to mess with my head. so i'm ready to find out what all the hype is about. i'll keep you posted, i swear.
as far as wedding planning goes, things are moving along, tho there still seems to be a million and one details to work out. i know i say it a lot, but i don't know where all the time goes.
bridesmaids dresses came in last week. so got them mailed off and in the hands of the BMs. they are beautiful! trying to think of what else, but my brain is so fried, i got nothing.
so more later. hope all is well with everyone. the clock is ticking...we're at mission critical. wish me luck w/the planning and the cicadas... m.

hey, everyone. so much for "all the latest and greatest," eh? the time really does go by quickly. and work is really cutting into my wedding planning time, that is for sure. can't believe that it will be two months from today that we get married. YIKES!
seems like there are sooooooooooooo many little details to take care of and more than one big detail that just won't seem to gel. guess it's all part of the fun, right?
for those of you who weren't aware, the mcmahon-ferguson wedding is so fabulous, it crosses two states. that's right folks, the ceremony will take place in famous cincinnati, ohio (oakley, to be exact) and the reception with commence in covington, kentucky, right across the mighty ohio river.
vows will be exchanged at the beautiful st. ceclia's catholic church, right on oakley square (one of the cool things about cincinnati is the multitude of town squares), within walking distance of my apartment, if you're so inclined. the ceremony starts at 6:30. cicadas will be jumping around long before then. wear your mosquito netting. just kidding. not really. more on that at our official web site.
oakley is an outskirt of downtown cincinnati, right off I-71. it's about 6 miles from the reception/the hotels. i'm gonna clock everything this week, i swear.
due to popular demand, i thought it might be time to put some hotel info on this lovely blog site. unfortunately, i don't know how to do links, but i can give them to you so you can check out the joints. rick is working on a web site that will be beautious and hopefully up and running by this weekend with all the appropriate linkage. watch this site (after this weekend) for that address. thanks for your patience!
there are two hotels in the area that i have made 'arrangements' with. the radisson ($85/night, either king or two doubles 859-491-1200) or embassy suites ($149/night for either a king or 2 doubles one bedroom w/pull out sofa, including cooked to order breakfast and an afternoon manager's reception - 859-261-8400). both are in covington. the reception is in covington, within walking distance of the radisson if need be ;); the embassy suites is probably like a mile away at most, on the river. if you make reservations at either of these hotels, i'd ask for a riverview if they'd give it to you without any extra charges. they should if one is available. both would have great views of cincinnati.
the embassy suites location is called: embassy suites hotel cincinnati rivercenter. don't ask me why since it's not in cincinnati, but i guess b/c it's within eyeshot. it is right next to my favorite bridge, the roebling suspension bridge, and you can walk across it right near the new freedom center and great american ballpark. or stay on the covington side and take a stroll through the beautiful neighborhoods on the river, hit the skyline chili (a cincinnati tradition as well as an addictive food that, after 2 years of resisting, i have finally fallen prey to), or have a beer at jack quinn's irish pub. you can try pasting this link into your browser to see the lovely establishment for yourself:
http://www.embassysuites.com/en/es/hotels/index.jhtml;jsessionid=DZEP1TBU3RPRWCSGBIW2VCQKIYFCVUUC?ctyhocn=CVGCVES
the radisson is called: radisson hotel cincinnati riverfront. same deal.
it looks kinda like a space-aged dump from the outside but it's beautiful on the inside. marble floor. retractable roof over the indoor pool, penthouse revolving restaurant with a full bar and brunch. spectacular view of the city if you can get it. sounds like they have complimentary airport shuttle service, too. getting to their site is a little less convoluted:
http://www.radisson.com/covingtonky
you may also want to visit: www.nkycvb.com. this is the northern kentucky convention and visitor's bureau. very close by is main strasse, the little german area of town. probably within walking distance of the radisson, depending on how much walking you like to do.
there is shopping in cincinnati itself at tower place mall. if you have time to get around town, my three favorite shops are:
metronation, at the corner of 9th & elm - they have a wide variety of items, most of which are unique, some are cheesy but in a good way, some are fun, some are nice, some are functional. everthing from candles (who doesn't sell candles these days?) to jewelry to furniture to magnets to stained glass, etc., etc., etc.
aestica, which is kind of in the heart of over the rhine, a somewhat hoody area, but also right around the clubs the kids like to frequent. it's a home furnishing shop & interior design studio offering comfortable service, eclectic style, and smart wares. located at 12th and Jackson, across from the Barrel House Brewing Company. can't be all bad, can it?
for more on over the rhine, check out: http://www.irhine.com
finally, intuitive, which is around 9th and vine, right past hamburger mary's (a fun, transvetite-inspired joint to have hamburgers and some of the best cosmos/martinis a girl/guy could ask for). intuitive has neat cards, jewelry, scarves, frames, etc., etc., etc.
also, there is a graeter's ice cream on the cincinnati side (somewhere around 4th & main). this is not to be missed, just ask oprah.
well, guess it's time to get working on those taxes. more later! looking forward to seeing everyone soon. love ya, m.
p.s.: oh, yeah: one of my favorite non-downtown stores is confetti cats, for the feline enthusiasts among you. it's in mt. lookout, another little town not far from oakley (it goes oakley, hyde park (the hoity-toity area, but a nice square w/another graeter's location), then mt. lookout. they have great cat toys, clothes, mats, clocks, jewelry, etc., etc., etc.

p.s. how could i forget! we also met with the music director and are 98% settled on what the sounds of the ceremony will be. exciting! thank you, good night! m.
Much has happened since we last updated this site.
Tuxes have finally been ordered - yeah!
Flowers have been discussed; still waiting to find out what that damage is gonna be. Yikes!
Hotel plans are still in the works. For some reason, the Radisson in Covington, KY doesn't seem to need any extra business. So I'm working on not giving them any. Should have that information posted soon. Embassy Suites have been set up, tho. Rooms are $149 a night, if you're interested in roomier accommodations. The price also includes a made-to-order continental breakfast (sounds intriguing) and a daily happy hour. My friend Rusty has stayed there and, as a result, I've enjoyed free well drinks and chips and salsa. They also have a nice atrium area and are located on the river, right near my favorite bridge, the Roebling Suspension Bridge. It's the one the Brooklyn Bridge is modeled after.
Flower girl, junior bridesmaids and bridesmaids dresses have all been ordered. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they all arrive intact and on time.
Next steps include invitation creation, layout and cutting out; making church decorations for the pews; finalizing program details; wedding band shopping and millions of other little details that are keeping me on my toes daily.
Rick and I continue our meetings with the Deacon, which are interesting and illuminating. We have two more to go to and then we're ready to move on to phase II: wedded bliss. I hear the old balls and chains rattling as I write this...
Oh, yeah. How could I forget? Our Honeymoon plans are also in place! Very exciting. We'll be heading to sunny Aruba to relax and unwind after the ceremony.
Looking forward to seeing everyone soon. Take care and stay tuned for more.
