things are moving along. i don't know if nicely, or slowly, or what, but for sure, inevitably. we are trying to finalize all our details, but it always seems like there is just one little thing hanging out there for everything so that the book can't be closed for some reason or another.

we met with the photographer tonight. that went very well. but, like i said, not 100% settled. one picture that i really want to get is the one where rick and i leave the church to everyone throwing rose petals at us. i've already asked my deacon twice and been turned down, but i'm going for a third time, gosh darnit. b/c i really want it. the good deacon is concerned it won't be picked up but i'll tell him i'll do it myself. i just really think that is a beautiful picture. so wish me luck on that one.

i also sorta finalized the flowers last week, but the whole petals thing is holding that transaction up. i'm not sure if my best bet is to beg him in person or implore him on the phone. maybe i'll bake him a pecan pie or something to appeal to his softer side. any ideas are appreciated. you can email me at work (maureen@ja-g.com).

the cake situation is almost finalized. we met with the baker and chose flavors, etc. so i guess that's mostly done. but i have to go back the week before the wedding with cash in hand before it's officially official.

had my second and final fitting yesterday. will pick it up, all pressed and ready (i hope) the thursday before the big day.

still trying to find a videographer. there are just some things that will be happening that i'd for sure like to immortalize forever on dvd. our photographer recommended a guy i'd already been in touch with who isn't available. but i was saddened all over again, hearing how great he is and how inexpensive. c'est la vie. i may have to hit up friends and relatives for those must-have moments, so be prepared. ;)

we really need to finalize our plans with the reception hall, but i'm waiting until we have all the rsvps in. if you're one of those folks who hasn't yet done it, whether you're coming or not, please go to sendrsvp.com and put in extension 895 a.s.a.p. if not, you'll be getting a call. please don't let me know directly. thanks!

confirmed hair appts with the salon. am having my run through this weekend. am i boring you guys to death? i have no idea, so i'm just giving you the latest since that's what this thing is supposed to be about.

went to a friend's wedding in wisconsin over the weekend. mt. horeb, to be exact. it was at tyrol basin, a local ski resort. it was very nice, though it rained throughout the outdoors ceremony and subsequent ski lift rides. but they say that's good luck, don't they? not sure what they'd say about rick getting a tick on him, the poor guy. i swear he is a tick magnet. luckily, i didn't get any. we enjoyed all the local beer and cheese on our whirlwind tour.

this weekend will probably be a craft and clean weekend for me. still need to make bows for the pews, make my flower girl baskets, finalize the program, etc., etc., etc. i can see it now; i'll be pulling an all-nighter the night before my wedding. ;)

oh yeah. we ordered our wedding bands a few weeks ago. i think they were supposed to be in by last weekend, but no dice. keep your fingers crossed on that one.

hope all is well w/everyone. looking forward to seeing you all soon. it should be fun!

that reminds me. so far, the cicadas have been a bust in my neighborhood. or should i say, on my street. that may be due to the lack of trees. we can hear their mating calls off in the distance...it really does sound like a 1950's sci fi flick when the flying saucers start hovering. some friends of mine have been bombarded, but for some reason, not us. tho i guess there's still only like 2 billion out on the way to 5 billion. so i'll keep you posted.

talk to ya soon, m.

Cicada Watch 2004

well, here we are, day 4 since the cicadas officially emerged and really, not that impressive. the way the media described it, i was expecting to look into the sky and only see a huge, swarming black cloud of these bugs that have waited 17 long years to descend upon the queen city. but alas, it was not to be. according to the news reports, the cicadas reared their larval heads on thursday. didn't see any. had that big rain, but still no bugs come friday. saturday, just after stating aloud that i didn't think they were ever coming, one literally fell out of the sky in front of my face.

much to my happy surprise, they were not as hideous as expected. as a matter of fact, i would almost call them pretty. their little larval husks are ugly, but the bugs themselves are kinda attractive. everyone had built up these menacing, satanic red eyes, but they're very subdued. and their wings are almost golden. i was expecting these giant, winged, cockroach-looking things. glad that's not the case.

rick and i took a walk today and were on serious cicada scouting duty. i saw one loan larvae husk on a tree and we were saying, 'man, there's none out yet.' then i looked up and there were a bunch on the leaves above our heads. but really, most of the ones we've seen are either the empty husks or dead cicadas. but considering there are supposed to be 5 million of these things flitting about, very disappointing thus far.

mother nature hasn't been cooperating much, either. they finally come up and the temperature drops about 30 degrees. we only had a high of 56 yesterday. so i don't know if that hurt them. plus, all the birds and squirrels are having a field day. digging in the ground. poor things wait 17 years to fight their way out of the earth only to become a scoobie snack. apparently, cicadas are good eatin'. they're supposedly the hershey kisses of the bug world. so every other creature - including dogs, cats, and yes, even people - eat them until they gorge themselves, allowing the ones who were on the late train to make their way to the tree tops to mate. this is certainly a case where being the first is not necessarily the best.

anyway, don't want to bore you with too much cicada talk, but it is interesting. for instance, the males don't even have any mouths. crazy, eh?

okay, enough about the cicadas for now. i will try to actually give you a wedding update next time. though i'll give you a sneak peak: i'm freakin' out! i don't know where the past 17 months have gone, but as usual, i am here at the last minute trying to squeeze everything in. typical, right mom? ;)

hope all is well with everyone....4 weeks to go! love ya, m.

i just cannot seem to keep on top of this thing...or anything else, for that matter.

well, the big news around here for the past several weeks has been the cicada invasion. or the threat thereof. you'd think there was no other news going on in the world. the irony is they've been talking about these bugs coming out since last saturday. all we needed was the ground temperature to be such-and-such (somewhere between 59 and 64 degrees, rick and i can't agree), and out 5 billion of these hideous creatures are supposed to emerge. well, it was hot all weekend, and no red-eyed, glorififed flying cockroaches were tp be found. then all we needed was a soaking rain. that's supposed to have been coming all week and here it is thursday. up until about 20 minutes ago, no rain. but it is really coming down. so i guess only time will tell if they're really coming out. stay tuned.

as a related story, apparently cicadas are good eats. all protein. no fat. i, for one, will not be finding out. they have red eyes, for goodness' sake. and they're bugs. blech. tho i guess i'll be seeing their innards up close and personal as everyones saying you wind up stepping on them there's so many. yikes. not looking forward to this at all. i think it's mostly fear of the unknown. and everyone trying to mess with my head. so i'm ready to find out what all the hype is about. i'll keep you posted, i swear.

as far as wedding planning goes, things are moving along, tho there still seems to be a million and one details to work out. i know i say it a lot, but i don't know where all the time goes.

bridesmaids dresses came in last week. so got them mailed off and in the hands of the BMs. they are beautiful! trying to think of what else, but my brain is so fried, i got nothing.

so more later. hope all is well with everyone. the clock is ticking...we're at mission critical. wish me luck w/the planning and the cicadas... m.
